The Uruguayan winger has signed a five-year deal with Stefano Pioli’s men and is looking forward to the experience of playing for the Sicilian side

The 20-year-old landed at Palermo airport on Saturday morning and proceeded to pen a five-year deal before facing the media to discuss his move from South America to Europe.

Speaking to Italian publication MediaGol.it, the midfielder enthused: “I am happy to be a new Palermo player. It’s a great thrill for me.

“I hope to do well in Sicily. I am honoured to begin this new experience. ”

Varela also revealed he had heard great things about Palermo, adding: “For me, Palermo is a great team.

“We are now an established team in the Italian league. I have heard many good things about the club and the team, and it is an honour for me to be here.”

Despite making just nine appearances for his local team back home, the Serie A club moved quickly to snap up the youngster, who only signed his first professional deal in 2009.
